Dar es Salaam. A 45th
minute goal by Donald Ngoma rescued Mainland giants Young Africans from the
jaws of defeat as they were forced to a one-all draw by Iringa’s Lipuli FC
yesterday.
Yanga were stunned to
find themselves behind at the Uhuru Stadium when Seif Abdallah cleverly beat
two defenders just outside the penalty box to grab a 44th-minute opener.
However, the
title-holders, needing a win or draw to remain in the touching distance of
leaders Simba, got the equaliser their pressure deserved a few seconds from
half time through the Zimbabwean forward. Lipuli coach Selemani Matola felt his
players performed well in frustrating the defending champions for large parts
of the thrilling match. “I can be nothing but proud of the team and everything
they put into the game,” the former Simba player said after the match.
He said he was proud of
his players as they came close to handing George Lwandamina’s men their first
defeat of the season. “I think it was a great performance. We knew we were
going to be under pressure in the second half but we defended well,” he added.
Lipuli, who earned a
promotion to the Mainland Premier League a few months ago, were impressive
throughout the match.
The hard-earned draw
means defending champions Yanga are two points adrift of their arch-rivals
Simba, who launched their campaign with a bang on Saturday.
Simba, coached by
Cameroonian Joseph Omog, had little mercy on Ruvu Shooting as they trounced the
army side 7-0 at the same venue to sound a warning note to their next
opponents. The match started at a cracking pace with both teams pressing
upfront in turn in search of the match-opener.
Eight minutes into the
game, Ngoma latched onto a Tshishimbi pass on the edge of the penalty box, only
to see his close range shot go a few centimetres wide. Lipuli responded three
minutes later when Abdallah, one of the strikers the Iringa-based team bank on
for goals, broke though but his effort narrowly missed target. Lipuli players
almost roughed up the referee in protest of a goal by Ngoma saying his eader had
not crossed the goal line, but to no avail.

seconds to the end, the visitors suffered a blow when referee gave Asante Kwasi
marching orders after two bookable offences.
But Lipuli held on until the final wistle.
